Description:youtubenation: By: Angela Sauceda This week our #WCW is Akilah Hughes, best known for her YouTube channel Smoothiefreak. The Kentucky native hits all the marks when it comes to chosing the perfect lady crush - she’s intelligent, funny, and arrived at our studio wearing a cupcake t-shirt. A. CUPCAKE. T-SHIRT. Lets just say, if I brought her home to meet my parents, they’d tell me to put a ring on it. During her recent visit to YouTube Nation, I had the chance to sit down with the budding YouTube star and talk everything from her work to the future of the platform.   Realizing her passion for comedy early on in life, Akilah credits her family for putting her on this path. In 2012, she made a commitment to pursue comedy by moving to New York City, her current residence. What has come to set Akilah apart from all the other New York City dreamers is her authenticity and commitment to comedy, acting, vlogging and blogging. “YouTube is the fastest way to have a comedy career,” states Akilah, whose YouTube channel boosts over 65,000 subscribers. While frequently writing for Hello Giggles and Refinery29, Akilah’s main passion has become her growing YouTube channel, Smoothiefreak. Akilah first started making videos in 2006, but it wasn’t until last December that her video, “Meet Your First Black Girlfriend,” put her channel on everyone’s radar. The video made the news media rounds from Huffington Post to Hello Giggles and sparked a rare conversation on interracial relationships. This a perfect example of why Akilah’s videos resonate with her fans— she’s able to take everyday scenarios and make them hilarious. On her channel, Akilah covers it all, from walking in heels, honest makeup tutorials, tipsy book talks with YouTuber friends, Scandal parodies and skits that illustrate life’s greatest mishaps. But it was one particular video that gained the attention of the busiest man on YouTube, the man that has made a million teen girls sob, John Green. After watching her tipsy book review of “The Fault In Our Stars,” John and Akilah quickly became internet buddies and then real life buddies when he invited her for a visit to Indiana. Akilah shares about John Green, “He’s so busy as a human. He’s just such a nice person, and that’s what stays with people. If at the end of the day… if you’re just being yourself and appreciative — I think he appreciates his success probably more than anybody I’ve ever met. He doesn’t think he deserves it, but he is just that humble guy from Indiana.” With prominent women of color gaining large audiences, such as Superwoman and Issa Rae, the landscape of YouTube is changing. Akilah expands, “I definitely think it’s shifting, it’s kind of rare to see that at all, people are like, ‘Oh, it’s possible!’ They have their own stories to tell and regular stories that anyone can relate to that is not just an episode of Martin. I think they’re ready to hear more stuff.” Sitting across from her, hearing this made me love Akilah Hughes even more. She was a game changer and didn’t find it necessary to put herself in a box or attach herself to a label. She makes creative decisions based on the belief that what makes her different is not her race or ethnicity but her desire to make people laugh. So, Akilah, from all of us at YouTube Nation, thanks for all the laughs. You are welcome to visit anytime — especially if you want to have a slumber party and play Girl Talk. Check back next week to see who Akilah reveals as her #WCW. Until then, enjoy our playlist of of Smoothiefreak’s greatest hits! Angela Sauceda is a YouTube Nation Curator and lover of Bill Murray. Be sure to watch Akilah’s #WCW on YouTube Nation!

Description:scienceisbeauty: The magnetic field is thought to be largely generated by an ocean of superheated, swirling liquid iron that makes up Earth’s the outer core 3000 km under our feet. Acting like the spinning conductor in a bicycle dynamo, it generates electrical currents and thus the continuously changing electromagnetic field. Other sources of magnetism come from minerals in Earth’s mantle and crust, while the ionosphere, magnetosphere and oceans also play a role. ESA’s constellation of three Swarm satellites is designed to identify and measure precisely these different magnetic signals. This will lead to new insight into many natural processes, from those occurring deep inside the planet, to weather in space caused by solar activity. Description:scienceisbeauty: About the thought-provoking “holographic principle" according to the approach of Mark Van Raamsdonk. This ‘holographic principle’ is strange even by the usual standards of theoretical physics. But Van Raamsdonk is one of a small band of researchers who think that the usual ideas are not yet strange enough. If nothing else, they say, neither of the two great pillars of modern physics — general relativity, which describes gravity as a curvature of space and time, and quantum mechanics, which governs the atomic realm — gives any account for the existence of space and time. Neither does string theory, which describes elementary threads of energy. Source: Theoretical physics: The origins of space and time (Nature)

Description:youtubenation: Bigger. Better. Faster. Smoother. That’s really all you need to know. And now that you have a blog soundtrack to set the tone, I’m going to spit some tech-babble on the mic: 4K. UltraHD. 3840x2160. VP9!!!!! Here at YouTube Nation, these are all terms that can simultaneously elicit profound enthusiasm or a glazed donut glance of ‘what geekery are you ranting about now, Peter?’ And if I follow it up with ‘VP9 is the newest biggest deal ever!’ - power naps might spontaneously commence literally in the middle of our daily Production meeting.  So, with great personal effort, I will push most post nerdery to the end of this blog entry and get on with the simple. Being the first daily 4K show on YouTube is awesome.  It’s like getting to say ‘first!’ in the comments of your favorite band’s new music video for all to see. Joking aside, it means we get to bring you better than broadcast quality YouTube content everyday.  And with VP9 encoding, you can stream four times better than broadcast HD straight to your laptop.  The picture really pops! Creatively, it means we can invite you into our studio to hang out with us and all of our great YouTuber guests in amazing detail.  Grace in 4K.  Mystery Guitar Man in UltraHD. Strawburry17 in 2160p!  Get to know all the YouTubers you know and love like you’ve never seen them before :) And it goes without saying it takes some super smart technology companies to make this happen.  YouTube’s platform enables bigger, better, faster and smoother playback of your favorite shows.  We use Red Scarlet cameras to capture the 4K picture, Adobe Creative Cloud to cut, composite and color grade the final show and Silverdraft Demon servers to encode our final 4K file for uploading to YouTube. Alas, I’ve digressed; you knew I couldn’t contain my post nerdery forever :)  Anyone interested in diving deeper into the 4K production culture, check out the links below. proactively • 4K is more K • peter links What is 4K really? If I wanted to shoot 4K… So I shot all this 4K, how can I make stuff with it? Jeez, this 4K is awesome!  What 4K videos can I watch on YouTube? And many more to come every day…

Title:#WCW Emily Graslie Proves Being Smart Never Goes Out Of Style

Description:youtubenation: By: Carly Lanning When we originally began throwing around the idea of #WCW — or if hashtags confuse you as they do me, Women Crush Wednesday — there was no debate that Emily Graslie should be our premiere honoree. Smart, charming and genuine, Graslie has not only taken it upon herself to make audiences excited about YouTube, but also become an inspiration for many women interested in exploring the male-dominated STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — field. In 2012, Graslie appeared in a VlogBrother’s video and soon after, was asked by Hank Green to host “The Brain Scoop.” Her show was originally based out of the University of Montana Zoological Museum, a place Graslie had been volunteering since in college.  In 2013, Graslie moved the “The Brain Scoop” to the Chicago Field Museum where she accepted a job as Chief Curiosity Correspondent. In each episode, Graslie explores the thousands of curiosities the museum has to offer. In the year since her arrival in Chicago, Graslie has skinned a wolf, held a meteorite, tackled the issue of sexism in the STEM community and continued her MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University. I think we can all agree, Graslie IS Superwoman but chooses to rock a sweater and oxfords instead of an uncomfortable unitard. Her work in the YouTube community has even caught the attention of Glamour magazine who named her as one of five female entrepreneurs to watch. But what makes Graslie so special to me— and thousands of her fans— is her confidence in being unapologetically herself. One day you’ll find her knee deep in the thoracic cavity of a wolf and the next, you’ll find her calmly discussing why collecting specimens for science is, in fact, not leading to extinction. Seeing Graslie’s work and candid conversations empower others to accept nothing less than equality and respect in their fields. So Emily Graslie, should you ever in Los Angeles, I’d very much like to buy your awesome self a drink. Explore Graslie’s channel here and check out her segment in tonight’s show at 6pm!
