Description: 07.15.07 The Beating Blog When you’re shooting for 30 hours straight with a team that just drove across Canada and back, a little thing called exhaustion sometimes rears its snoring head. So when we were in Docville over a year ago, trying to make it looks like Chris Harrison was beating a man to death at 2am, you can understand that we might have cut a corner or two. Well, being the perfectionists we are, we decided we need a ‘pick-up shot’ of our Zeppelin Scout getting his unrecognizable brain handed to him. And Jeff foolishly stepped up to the plate to be the poor schmuck to get a 14-inch wrought-iron pistol smashed into his face at full speed. This is the story of the small scar in the middle of his forehead. |Matt & Jeff Campagna

The sleeping in the car, the snow in May, the beef jerky, and of course, Mike Tattoo. Yes it’s all here. There really is no good way to sum up the road-trip of a lifetime with anything short of a video about the road-trip of a lifetime. So here it is, in all its lord-of-the-flies glory. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Mads however, living in Denmark, we could not confidently go shopping for until he flew into the country and we could try things on him. We had already done some serious research, and had narrowed his costume down to a few shirts and couple hats, so essentially the shopping part was done. All that remained was the travel, fitting and purchasing parts! | Matt + Jeff Campagna

Description: 06.15.06 In order to make the trip out to Drumheller Alberta, there were a few things that had to be sorted out. Of course there’s equipment and actors, and a little thing called pre-production, but most critical to the trip was the method of transportation. We decided that flying was out of the question; one piece of equipment mis-handled by a baggage thrower at the airport and we’d have had a broken lens or a smashed lighting kit... any one of hundreds of items damaged could be a production halting screw-up. So that meant we were driving. Which meant we needed something to drive. Sure we’ve got cars, but a Sunfire and an Intrepid could hardly haul seven guys and all the gear and props for Six Reasons Why. Enter the Cubie. It just so happens, one of our masterfully skilled audio engineers came across the opportunity to trade his ability to master an album for a 16-foot french-Canadian Ford Cube Van. It’s a long story. Needless to say, this was going to become our production vehicle. After spending over a grand to get her certified and after three attempts to get the plates changed from Quebec to Ontario, we were finally driving the van legally. Whether it would make it all the way to Alberta or not, not even our mechanic could say, but at least she was driving... and stopping. The only thing left before hitting the road to the prairies was to make the van distinctly Campagna... a bit of orange paint, a few A/V gadgets and a week later, we had our Six Reasons Wagon. And Brandon had one hell of a paint job to do if he ever wanted to sell her off again. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Description: 05.31.06 When an accomplished and skilled foreign actor offers his time to an independent film, there are certain rules and guidelines one should adhere to in the interest of perhaps creating an on-going professional relationship. Sadly for Mads Koudal, we aren’t really familiar with any of those rules. Between prank-ordering the “Bland Ulcer Meal” as his in-flight dinner, hiding from him at the airport and video taping his concerned search, and rudely awakening him up from his jetlag-nap with a shot-gun toting co-star, it’s quite possible we broke every rule in the book during the indoctrination of Mads into the Six Reasons Why club of the “Magnificent Seven”. And that’s not even counting the shenanigans that took place during the 40-hour drive across Canada. But in the process we all forged friendships that are certain to last for many more Campagna-helmed projects to come. So enjoy the first moments of Mads’ experience with the Six Reasons Why crew in Toronto, and be glad it wasn’t you. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Description: 05.25.06 So here we are, at the end of May after meeting our Danish actor, Mads Koudal, at the airport, driving through four Canadian provinces, running the gamut of possible obstacles and coming home with most of principal photography wrapped and not a single blog to show for it. Don’t worry they’re on their way... if we were Bryan Singer or Peter Jackson there’d be a video blog team bigger than the crew for our entire film, and they’d have finished posting those for us already. But alas, we’re still playing catch up. Today also happens to be the birthday of 50% of the directors, 25% of the lead actors and 100% of the animal actors in Six Reasons Why. So Happy birthday to everyone, hopefully Rosie gets a nice Birthday bale of hay or something, since Matt and Chris will definitely be getting some delicious Birthday barley and wheat beverage today. We’ve got some fun things on their way, and today’s postings should be pretty fun, too. You see, before we left for Drumheller, we tried to do a read-though of the script to see how long our shocking new western might be. This was even before Mads arrived, leaving no choice but to have not one but two Campagna brothers as main characters for the reading. We were a bit worried when the read-though came in a bit shy of our 90 minute estimate. As it turns out, our concerns were pretty unfounded; now that we’re doing some preliminary edits of the footage, it’s looking like it’ll be over 90-minutes with no problem at all. In fact, keeping it under 120 might be an interesting challenge. So, enjoy our attempt at a round table reading of Six Reasons Why, interruptions and all.... | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Description: 04.28.06 Before we leave for Drumheller, there are some special effect tests that need to be done, the Laurence effect looks sweet, hopefully that will come out well on the day, but more importantly, our western needs blood. Lots of sticky, disgusting blood. And a good method for applying blood, and making it look like a gunshot going off. Robert Rodriguez managed to pioneer a pretty fun toy he called a Guacamole Gun. The Guac’ Gun was an alternative to running the risk of blowing up Antonio Bandaras’ hand during the filming of Desperado. Since we plan on blowing up at least one throat in Six Reasons Why, we thought a similar precaution might be in order. So sit back, relax and watch two otherwise well behaved brothers play with their food. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Description: 04.06.06 Most large organizations have a name for a person who acts as a go-fer. Go-fer coffee, go-fer the mail, go-fer the food, go-fer the sandbags… in movies, that’s called a production assistant. Funny word for floater that comes in handy when all other hands are tied. Since there’s essentially two people (and by extension four hands) looking after this movie right now, those hands get tied pretty fast. But, none-the-less, the two of us have been running mad errands for about two months in frenzied anticipation of our May 3rd departure from Toronto for Drumheller for our 12 days of principal photography. We’re just having so much fun running around that we thought we’d share an average day out of our weekend as we collect props and tools and various nick-knacks. Essentially, we’re just trying to get all of our eggs into the one precious basket that we’re planning to drive for 40 hours in a cube van across the country in two short weeks. Yup. Two weeks. No problem. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Title:06 - Special Effect Test

Description: 04.16.06 When you’re making a movie on a shoestring budget, there are lots of corners that need cutting. The real trick is making sure that the audience has no idea. Corners like hiring line producers and production assistants, corners like flying to locations in first class so your actors feel important, corners like a warm meal from craft services on set… all these things are the Hallmarks of a Hollywood big-budget production. And clearly, things we cannot afford. Lucky for us, none of these items really show up on screen, per se. Sure a well fed actor is a happy actor, but we’re shooting a western, and when did Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson ever look happy in a western? Answer: Never. So we’re safe having hungry, miserable, cranky actors. Another corner we have to cut is a visual effects supervisor. Someone to come up with methods to achieve the special effects we require, either practical or digital. So we’re doing it ourselves. Luckily, we’re no strangers to special effects; every project we’ve ever done had some form of special effect… so that means we must have been supervising it ourselves in the past. For this particular blog, we’re trying to achieve a rather simple effect, but one that is a staple of the western genre: the lawrence. I’m sure you’re saying “Lawrence? He’s a nice guy… I’m sure he’d be happy to come to Alberta”… but actually a lawrence is the name for when the heat of the ground causes light to bend in waves and things in the distance get wobbly and weird. See? You learn something everyday. So, to get this effect we need one thing: heat. And what better way to get heat than with fire? So here we are, with a butane torch uncomfortably close to an $8,000 HD camera. That’s a good mix. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Title:05 - The Big... Test

Description: 03.23.06 By now you’re probably familiar with our misadventures in the snow-covered parking lot of Docville; if not, where have you been? You have more blogs to watch... Naughty, naughty... Anyway, when we decided to do a screen test for our two featured characters from the “Long Shot” bar scene in Docville in the dead of winter, we thought briefly about going back to Docville to do a fully costumed rehearsal... very briefly. A better idea, we thought, was to just shoot the test on a green-screen background and throw in the bar after the fact. We’ve got some serious experience with the green-screen, considering that the first film we ever worked on was pretty much shot on green-screen and nothing else, a little dress rehearsal would be a cake-walk. In this little exercise, not only did we get to play with some new costume bits we picked up, but more importantly we got to meet two great actors that we’ve never before had the pleasure to work with. After a couple of lines of dialogue and some conversation about film, it looks like Campagna Brother’s Studios just got ourselves two new regulars to welcome to the fold. Both of them sharp as tacks and spot on with their delivery and insight, it even looks like we’ll be expanding the scene just to give them a bit more screen time to shine. And who knows, if there’s ever a Seventh Reason Why, our Bartender and Zeppelin scout might just be the main characters... | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Description: 02.28.06 As filmmakers, there are very few tasks that can be described as ‘easy’. Getting the perfect shot - not easy, casting the perfect actor - not easy, finding and dressing the perfect set - not easy... usually. So, naturally, it’s hard to put into words how happy we were when, one fine summer day, we randomly stumbled upon an absolutely picture-perfect old west frontier town built in the middle of nowhere. Of course, we’re planning on shooting our scenes at this location in the warmer weather... but in the middle of a Canadian winter, we still had to ‘scout’ the location, and plan out all of our shots to be sure everything goes as smoothly as possible when we had a dozen or so actors staring at us, expecting us to know what we’re doing. So, off we set in the midst of a blizzard to do a two-man rehearsal of all the action we would be shooting on our production day later this year. As dramatic as our rehearsal was for us, getting ourselves and our Chrysler out of our picture-perfect old west frontier town’s snow covered parking lot was a whole other dramatic event. Now that the feeling has returned in our fingers and toes we clutch our bellies as we laugh heartily while we watch these antics. Hopefully you will, too. So go ahead, clutch your belly, you know you want to. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Description: 02.05.06 When it comes to music, we’re definitely perfectionists. Not that we have much skill in the area of playing the actual music, but we sure love to listen to it. Which is why we’ve been so damn picky about the musical score in our dirty little western. To that end, we’ve finally put our own Six Reasons Why musical ensemble together in one room and let them loose. Between Laurence (our head of Music and lead composer), Nick (our percussion sensation) and Rob, (our resident electric guitar axe-pert), we managed to come up with some haunting and original sounds that are starting to really drill down to the sound of the characters, the setting and the mood of Six Reasons Why. Now, given that a picture says a thousand words, there’s really no point in trying to describe the sound they’ve conjured so far... so just watch the video blog, listen to the video blog, and enjoy the video blog. | Matt & Jeff Campagna

Title:02 - Guns, Guns, Guns... Hands-on Research

Description: 01.07.06 Yeah... so, guns. In Canada, even the word sends chills down many a spine. But as uncomfortable as they make some people, we, as devoted filmmakers, had to explore this previously foreign realm. Seeing that gunplay is such a vital part of any classic western we needed a full understanding of how exactly these things work and their effect the human body. The reason this was so important to us is, although the shootouts in those old ‘Eastwood’ revisionist westerns were bloody cool, they were ultimately complete and utter bologna. However, we couldn’t toss a 15-minute opera of a gun battle (a la ‘Heat’) into our modest homage either. We needed to find a middle ground; an exciting, yet inexpensive, blend of classic shootout and gangsta’ gun-play that would be right at home in our dirty little western tale. So off we went to the local dingy firearms bunker. A structure so secure and remote you’d expect to find Hitler and Hoffa playing 5 card stud by the fireplace. Before Jeff knew it he had a 6 shootin’ Smith and Wesson in his hands filled with 6 live rounds. It was important to know exactly what sort of physical recoil firing a real revolver would have on the body. This way we can sit on the fence between realism and Josey Wales. After Jeff had fired off what felt like 200 rounds and was on the verge of insanity, our Photographer, Tania picked up the 6 shooter, and fired her first bullet clear through the forehead of the poor hanging target man thingy. Nothing helps you sleep better at night than having a closet sniper on your team. |Matt & Jeff Campagna

Title:01 - Location Scouting for Six Reasons Why

Description: 09.26.05 We have survived one of the more dangerous tasks of our wee film; location scouting. We grabbed a cheap charter flight to Calgary and rented a fine and exotic low end Sunfire from budget rent-a-car (unbeknownst to the budget clerks; the meek tan 4 door hot rod would have a dark future of abuse ahead). We picked up Matt’s old roommate from University, Gabor, who worked with us some older films as an actor and special effects technician and then moved out to the prairies to escape the insane demands of his filmmaker roommate. With the help of Gabor’s Dell Navigation system we embarked on the 2 hour journey to Drumheller; the dinosaur capital of the world and home of Alberta’s badlands. We checked in to the local Super 8, greatly due to its exhilarating waterslide. We woke up every morning at 5:00 am and took advantage of the Super 8’s free waffle deal. Then we would drive around filming random sunrises freezing our skinny white asses off. We would then move from one interesting landscape to another, slipping around in the wet muck or “dinosaur snot’ as the locals called it. When the sun was up the climate was slightly more tolerable although we had to purchase some overalls and wellies at the local outlet store because by the end of day one we looked more like over-worked pig farmers then young budding film-makers. None the less we got some great footage, acquired very useful Albertan contacts, made some deals with some fantastic locations and sets, mastered the Super 8 waterslide and transformed a mundane 4-door tan colored Pontiac into a dirt colored off-roading machine. Boy did we rip the poor sunfire a new one. |Matt & Jeff Campagna
